An overview of the therapeutic potentials and safety profiles of Berberis species in Türkiye

Abstract

The objective of this review is to present a comprehensive summary of the botanical descriptions, traditional uses, phytochemical properties, pharmacological activities, clinical studies, and safety of Berberis species that are naturally found in Turkey. According to our findings, people in Turkey use various Berberis species for both food and medicinal purposes. Fruits, roots, and flowers of Berberis crataegina are used to treat diarrhea, hemorrhoids, high blood sugar, and icterus. Berberis integerrima is used to treat hemorrhoids, and Berberis vulgaris is used to treat diabetes and hemorrhoids, as well as being used as an antipyretic, stomachic, appetizer, wound healer, and laxative. Berberis cretica is used for medicinal purposes among the people. Clinical research has indicated that berberine holds promise as a potential candidate for the treatment for various diseases, including diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, and liver disease. Berberine is a promising natural agent with low toxicity that can be used in numerous clinical applications such as metabolic disorders, inflammation, and combined cancer therapy. While numerous studies have explored the pharmacological effects of Berberis vulgaris, research on other naturally occurring Berberis species in Turkey is lacking. For this reason, it is necessary to undertake comprehensive clinical studies regarding Berberis species that grow naturally in Turkey. Overall, the use of Berberis species for their therapeutic properties has great potential, and further research is needed to fully understand their pharmacological properties and to explore new formulations and derivatives. This will help to maximize the benefits of Berberis species in managing a wide spectrum of diseases in the human population.

Türkiye'deki Berberis türlerinin terapötik potansiyellerine ve güvenlik profillerine genel bir bakış

Abstract

Bu derleme, Türkiye'de doğal olarak bulunan Berberis türlerinin botanik özellikleri, geleneksel kullanımları, fitokimyasal özellikleri, farmakolojik aktiviteleri, klinik çalışmaları ve güvenliği hakkında genel bir bakış sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bulgularımıza göre, Türkiye halkı çeşitli Berberis türlerini hem gıda hem de tıbbi amaçlarla kullanmaktadır. Berberis crataegina’nın meyveleri, kökleri ve çiçekleri ishal, hemoroid, yüksek kan şekeri ve sarılığı tedavi etmek için kullanılır. Berberis integerrima hemoroid tedavisinde, Berberis vulgaris diyabet ve hemoroid tedavisinde kullanıldığı gibi ateş düşürücü, mideyi açıcı, iştah açıcı, yara iyileştirici ve müshil olarak da kullanılmaktadır. Bununla birlikte, Berberis cretica'nın bilinen bir etnobotanik kullanımı yoktur. Klinik araştırmalar, berberinin diyabet, kanser, hipertansiyon, obezite ve karaciğer hastalığı dahil olmak üzere çeşitli hastalıklar için etkili bir tedavi olma potansiyeline sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Berberin, metabolik bozukluklar, inflamasyon ve kombine kanser tedavisi gibi çok sayıda klinik uygulamada kullanılabilen, düşük toksisiteye sahip umut verici bir doğal ajandır. Berberis vulgaris’in farmakolojik etkilerini araştıran çok sayıda çalışma olmasına rağmen, Türkiye’de doğal olarak bulunan diğer Berberis türleri ile ilgili araştırmalar eksiktir. Bu nedenle Türkiye’de doğal olarak yetişen Berberis türleri üzerinde kapsamlı klinik çalışmalara ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Genel olarak, Berberis türlerinin terapötik özellikleri için kullanımı büyük bir potansiyele sahiptir ve bunların farmakolojik özelliklerini tam olarak anlamak ve yeni formülasyonları ve türevlerini keşfetmek için daha fazla araştırmaya ihtiyaç vardır. Bu, insanlarda çeşitli hastalıkların tedavisinde Berberis türlerinin faydalarını en üst düzeye çıkarmaya yardımcı olacaktır.
